- I was drawn like a magnet to
the cemetery Island of
San Michele where Venice
buries all their dead. It is
truly unique, a whole Island
with graves dating back to
the dawn of the Island. I
read about a legend where a
little girl was
drowned accidentally
because the gondola she was
in, was hit by another gondola.
The little girl was brought to
San Michele, the cemetery
Island where nearly all
Venetians are buried. The
legend goes that at
times, candles appear around
a tiny white coffin just off
the Island. It inspired me to
do this odd painting and write
this poem of San Michele.
